The beginning...
Portmore Holiness Christian Church, the largest and fastest growing congregation of
the Holiness Christian Churches Inc., was birthed out of a Cell group Ministry, led
by the now Senior Pastor, Bishop Rev. Dr. Alvin Bailey. Bishop Bailey, who was a
member of the Kingston Holiness Christian Church had recently moved to Greater
Portmore, St. Catherine. A cell group ministry commenced in the home of the
Bailey's.
As the membership of the cell group outgrew their home this was
indication of the need for extension of the ministry in Portmore. Subsequently, on
February 4, 1996 he, along with sixteen members was anointed and commissioned
by the then Bishop of the HCC Inc., Rev. Samuel Vassell, to start the Portmore
Holiness Christian Church.
On Sunday, February 11, 1996 the newly formed Portmore Holiness Christian
Church (PHCC) had its first Worship Service at the Greater Portmore
Comprehensive High School with seventy (70) persons in attendance. Rev. Noel
Gibbs, the then presiding Bishop of the denomination was guest speaker and he ably
delivered a sermon from Acts 13:2.
Enabled by the grace of God, PHCC reaped its first harvest which was evident on
Sunday May 26, 1996, when the first baptism of five persons took place at the Fort
Clarence Beach in Portmore. The Lord continued to add to the Church those who
were to be saved. As God blessed this thriving congregation, they rapidly outgrew
the classroom. Subsequently, the PHCC relocated to the auditorium of the
Kensington Primary School in Greater Portmore. They held their first sevice in this
new loaction on January 12, 1997. God continued to bless the congregation and
again they rapidly outgrew the main auditorium. Hence the Church started to have
two Divine Worship Services on a Sunday morning.
